How Important Is Industry Expertise When Choosing a Partner to Implement and Support Your ERP Software Solution?
As I think about the topic of “industry expertise” there’s an 18th century English nursery rhyme about “the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker” that comes to mind. You wouldn’t ask the butcher or the candlestick maker to bake a cake. Nor would ask the baker or the candlestick maker to sell you a prime cut of beef. You get the point.
Industry Expertise IS Important
Let’s take a look at these industries so we can understand what role industry expertise plays in each.
Also known as “process manufacturing,” recipe manufacturing requires a different skillset and an ERP software solution that accommodates its unique processes, which differ from the needs of discreet manufacturers.
Recipe manufacturers combine ingredients while discreet manufacturers combine parts. Recipe ingredients might come in various weights and measures. The Bill of Materials (BOM) might include half a pound of this, 3 ounces of that, 2 tablespoons of a third ingredient. And the ingredients have different expiration dates, too. Whereas in discreet manufacturing, a bolt is a bolt. The BOM would never require half a bolt. Nor do bolts come with expiration dates.
Wholesale Distribution has its own unique set of requirements, too, including Supply Chain Management (SCM), Inventory Management (IM), and a Warehouse Management System (WMS). As a wholesale distributor, you would want an ERP solution that offers these specific capabilities and a technology partner who understands your business.
Field Service Management (FSM) is a horse of yet another color. Technicians in the field need tools that office workers don’t require. In order to manage employees who are installing, servicing, and/or repairing systems or equipment in the field, field service companies need scheduling and dispatching applications, remote time entry systems, fleet management, and more. Technicians in the field often need to remotely access inventory information and client support history, and they need the ability to enter their time on the go.
Tidestone Solutions offers custom-built time entry applications and decades of experience in the field service industry that will allow you to gain higher productivity in the field.
But… I Thought Microsoft Dynamics Is a Horizontal ERP Solution!
Yes, that’s true. Microsoft Dynamics GP and Dynamics 365 Business Central are horizontal solutions, which means that they are not limited to supporting just one industry. However, that does not negate the importance of industry expertise.
And while Tidestone Solutions has developed specific expertise in the three industry sectors above, we also have the pleasure of working with clients in several other sectors: Finance, Nonprofits, Associations, and Pharmacy to name just a few.
